Editor's Note
Hey Family,
Every week, we are bringing you one deep topic plus the most important water news happening right now around the globe. This week we are starting where it matters most, with the billions of people who still do not have what you and I turn on from a tap every morning.
Read this one slowly. Then pass it on to someone who needs to hear it.

🌍 Global Water Health
Cholera Crisis Hits Borno State, Nigeria: It Comes Down to Water
In Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, a cholera outbreak linked to contaminated water sources and open defecation has sickened more than 8,457 people and killed 85 between May 1 and June 7, 2026, according to a UNICEF flash update. The hardest-hit areas are displacement settlements where overcrowding, shallow wells, and broken sanitation infrastructure leave families with no safe option. Three cholera treatment centers with over 530 beds are operating, but demand is outpacing capacity as the rainy season arrives and worsens contamination.
Stories like this are a sobering reminder that access to clean, traceable water is not just a lifestyle choice. For millions of people, it is the difference between life and death.

Teaching Kids to Hydrate Through Play Works, and It Matters
A randomized controlled trial published May 29, 2026 in the journal Nutrients found that a six-week gamified educational program significantly improved hydration knowledge, behavior, and hydration status in elementary school children. Researchers tested 207 Tunisian children using an adapted "Snakes and Ladders" board game built into physical education class. Kids in the intervention group drank more water, knew more about why it matters, and showed measurable improvements by the end of six weeks.
When people, especially young people, understand the "why" behind clean water, they make better choices for life.

💰 Water Economics
America's Two Largest Water Utilities Are Merging: Here's What That Means
On June 22, 2026, American Water Works and Essential Utilities announced Virginia became the third state to approve their landmark all-stock merger. The deal will create a combined utility serving more than 4.7 million water and wastewater customer connections across at least 14 states — the largest consolidation in U.S. water utility history. The merger is expected to close by Q1 2027.
Consolidation at this scale shifts water infrastructure into fewer and fewer corporate hands, which is exactly why small, community-first providers who know their source and serve their neighbors remain so essential.

Water Is Still Not Reaching Everyone 💧
2 Billion
people on Earth do not have safe drinking water at home — roughly 1 in 4 people on the planet.
The problem is not spread out evenly. It hits hardest in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and parts of the Middle East.

60M+ Ethiopia |
70M Nigeria |
80% Pakistan |
In 2025, the United Nations released its World Water Development Report warning that demand for fresh water will outpace supply by 40% by 2030 if current trends continue. Meanwhile, climate change is making rainfall less predictable, droughts longer, and groundwater harder to reach.
The good news? Progress is being made. UNICEF reported in early 2026 that 107 countries have now established national water plans, up from 79 countries just five years ago. Still, the pace of progress is not fast enough. Every day, more than 1,000 children under five die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation.
At Family Springs, we believe water is life. Knowing what is happening in the world around us reminds us why we take every bottle seriously.

Kids Corner 🌱 "Water The Seed"
Hello, young water scientists! Water is one of the most amazing things on Earth.
|
🧠 Your Mind Needs WaterYour brain is about 75% water! When you don't drink enough, thinking gets harder, like trying to run through mud. Even losing just 1–2% of your body's water can make it harder to pay attention and remember things. |
💪 Your Body Needs WaterAbout 60% of your body is water, and for kids it can be even higher, around 65–70%! Your muscles, bones, heart, and lungs all need water to work. Every sip is like giving your whole body a high-five! |
🌊 Your Soul Needs WaterHave you ever sat by a river and felt calm? Scientists discovered that being near water helps your brain relax. People all over the world have known for thousands of years that water is sacred. It connects us all. |
🌊 This Week's Water Challenge
Every morning this week, drink a full glass of water as soon as you wake up — BEFORE breakfast, before your phone, before anything else. Then grab a piece of paper and draw or write one word that describes how you feel after drinking it.
At the end of the week, look at all seven words or drawings. What do you notice? Share your water journal with a parent or friend!
